Sonnet 48,310

(2004)

What better word exists than sweet goodbye?
An unconditional finality -
Which strikes even the blindest eye to see
And lets even the tightest knot untie?
How foolish are we poets in our quest
To soften thus the feel of splintered wood,
And shroud deformity beneath a hood,
With each linguistic trick at our behest.
For when a boat capsizes on the ice,
It's sung of only in the ocean's scales;
And after ham'ring thus the final nails,
A word of beauty would too much suffice.
My last goodbye to you then must be hushed:
For silence better speaks the love you've crushed.
