The Accidental Vacation
Date: May 2001
Location: Atlantic City, NJ

Description: Senior Week is when seniors in college are still technically in school, done with classes, and simply waiting for graduation.  During this time, many of them have wild parties or deface something or other.  My girlfriend at the time was going to go down the shore one evening with friends to grab some drinks.  I hopped along.  When we go there, the Boardwalk was effectively closed.  Everyone shrugged and decided to drive back to school.  I thought that was silly and, since we were out, I asked her if she wanted to a road trip.  She said “Where?”  I said “Why not Atlantic City?  I’ve never been there.”  We got there by just taking roads that said south.  We stopped at a store to buy a toothbrush and toothpaste (since we hadn’t packed to go overnight anywhere.)  After a few hours of driving, we made it down there, found a small motel a few miles out.  We only had a total of $60 in our pockets, which was enough to get a hotel and two bus tickets into AC (for which they comped you an $11 voucher.)  With our vouchers, we played slots for four hours, and I even made $50, enough to cover the costs of the hotel.  Essentially we had a free trip in Atlantic City.  It wasn’t my first trip to a casino, nor would it be my last, but it was one of the most satisfying.  Oh, and we went to the beach too, only to be surrounded by fatties.
